Kiawah,SC

A great place to take a vacation is anywhere that you have a free place to stay. Staying for free means being able to spend a little more money on attractions, shopping, going out to eat, or whatever else you want to spend money on.

Last year over Spring Break, my roommate and I were fortunate enough to be invited down to Kiawah Island, SC to stay with some of her family friends. The place was gorgeous and had a dock right out to a river. I don't actually remember if it was technically a river, but it was salt water whatever it was called. It was great being able to stay with a family who was willing to cook for us and let us use their kayaks. One of the best memories I have is when the two of us went kayaking, a curious dolphin was out with us swimming all around us and even right underneath us!!

Kiawah was just such a charming place to go. It's a great area especially for avid golfers. They had beautiful country clubs, a cute little town center with some shops, places to eat, a grocery store and a gas station. The beach is also right there! My roomie and I went in early March, and it was a little chilly on the beach but it was still enjoyable. I would recommend going later on in March if you really want to swim in the ocean, but don't wait too long because I hear the bugs get pretty bad in some areas down there!

Another great thing about Kiawah, is that is not too bad of a drive back into SC. You pretty much stay on one road that is lined with little houses and lots of churches. Charleston, SC, is also about a 40 minute drive away. We spent a day there and saw all the sights by way of a carriage ride. It was a great way to get to see a lot without all the walking. It confused us a little around dinner time though because a lot of places down south closer earlier than they do up here. So the shops were all closing and no one was really at the restaurants which made us think they were not open either! Some restaurants also had more than one entrance, with nobody working either of them. We walked around for a good while before finally just asking. So my travel tip for anyone who goes there, REMEMBER the shops close early and don't be afraid to just go into a restaurant and eat!
